The warmest of welcomes awaits you at Hill House East -

Hill House EastCome and be spoilt at our unique Country Bed and Breakfast, which is set in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' in Upper Weardale. Our aim is for you to enjoy staying in this venerable old stone house as much as we do; to feel 'at home' rather than 'in accommodation'.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our food and do not believe in 'portion control'! We make our own bread, do lots of home baking and use eggs from our own hens. Guests are greeted on arrival with a tea/coffee tray and homemade baking in the guest sitting room and, although there are tea/coffee making facilities in the bedrooms, we will happily serve tea and coffee at any time during the day at no extra cost.

As we only accommodate a maximum of four guests the house is a tranquil haven if you just want to sit by the log stove and read or relax. Or, you can go out and about in our beautiful countryside, for walking and cycling. In summer, you can sit in the comfortable summer house and watch the sun set behind the hills.

Guests have their own key and entrance and, when we have guests, we withdraw to our own cosy quarters separate from the rest of the house. Effectively, Hill House East is yours during your stay. Free Wi-Fi access is available within the house. We are happy for guests to bring dogs if they can stay overnight in their owner's cars; we have two big fields for walking dogs in. For everyone's health and safety we kindly request that guests do not smoke in the house.

We Welcome Wainwright Walkers takling the 'PENNINE JOURNEY'! This important long distance walk passes literally by Hill House East and has one of its overnight 'stops' in Westgate. If walkers want to make us a 'two night base' we will happily transport them and their baggage from and on to their next stop. We are also directly on one of the 'Alternate' COAST TO COAST bike routes and can offer secure cycle storage.

Hill House East is also a very central base for exploring the wider Northern area and its attractions; Barnard Castle, Durham City and Newcastle are less than an hour away and the Northumbrian Coast, Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales about an hour and a half.
